Let me start by saying this drawing was done before Illustrator introduced their Live Trace feature. This is an Illustrator drawing of former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez. While working at TimeFrame, Inc I had started to develop a style of drawing in Illustrator. This was the first time that I tried to use that style on my own. I’m a huge Red Sox fan and I was looking for a way to combine my love of the Red Sox with my desire to expand my illustration/design skills.

I started by finding a photo of Pedro online. I then started tracing different areas of color. As the illustration progressed, it started to take on a unique look. If you look at this illustration in outlines, you’ll be able to see how many different shapes of color went into the composition.

Unfortunately, this art style is now common with movies like A Scanner Darkly and the Charles Schwab “Talk to Chuck” ads.
