This is the website of the Advertising/Marketing agency where I work. What you see here is actually the second website that I built for Single Source. The first one never went live. It was completely Flash based and was scrapped at the last minute. After seeing how this one came out, I’m glad that we put some extra thought into the site.
Web design is a burgeoning area for Single Source, so the aim was to show a wide range of web skills. But, we had to be careful that it didn’t look like Homer Simpson’s website, which showed a lot of different animations that didn’t really do anything other than move around and annoy the viewer. We wanted to show basic web, as well as Flash skills. Also, we wanted to show that we have scripting knowledge. The moving menu on the left of the screen is new javascript technology that shows advanced skills, but doesn’t slow down the viewer’s experience.
For years, some companies have shied away from Flash because it wasn’t on everyone’s computer. Also, the site uses a wider screen size than the old standby of 800 x 600 pixels. Single Source is looking for a customer that is a little more web savvy than the average grandmother.
A lot of the content on the site was recycled form older versions of the Single Source website. There was a good amount of debate about the staff page. We could have gone with standard head shots of everyone, but we went with casual shots. It does a great job of showing the team in natural environments that you would see if you stopped by the building. Though they don’t look like it, all of these shots were staged. I found out that it’s tough to get people to pose for photos that don’t look posed.
The overall look and feel of the website is a great representation of the company. Busy juggling a lot of different projects, but focused on each one.
